Phase I: Purpose and Target Audience
What are your goals for the newsletter? What results would you like to achieve? Who is your target audience and what are their "hot buttons?" What would entice them to take three to five minutes out of their busy schedules to read your newsletter?
Phase II: Publishing Strategy
How often will you publish? What will your publication look like (HTML vs. text vs. print)? How about branding? Will your publication have a name? Will it need to work synergistically with your website? How will you attract subscribers? Do you have a budget allocated?
Phase III: Content Specifics
What kind of content will most entice your readers? Are you striving for promotional copy or something more substantial in scope, such as full feature articles? How do you want to position yourself with your audience? For example, you might want to position yourself as a thought leader who presents leading edge ideas through an original feature or two. Alternatively, you might want to share the latest news about your topic of expertise or do mostly promotional content.
Phase IV: Measurement
How will you measure the success of your publication? For example, number of subscribers, number of click throughs, number of qualified leads, and so on.
